With him, were some chopsticks, he then said to his eldest son: â€Å"Break them†. The son strained and strained, but could not break the bundle of chopsticks. The other sons also tried, and were not successful. The father then said, â€Å"now, each of you take a stick and break it†. Then, each of the chopsticks was broken with ease. â€Å"You see my meaning, union gives strength†, said their father (1). I am sure most of us would have heard of this story and the morale is the limitation of one’s single effort and the effectiv eness of unity, which in this case, TEAMWORK. Ever since many decades ago, human already knew the importance of teamwork. That is why most of the sports (e. g. soccer, basketball) require more than one person to play. Even for those single player sports (badminton, table tennis), team plays are also available. Moreover, there is never a one-man army but platoons of soldiers defending a country. All these show that teamwork has a long history in our daily life. Hence, I strongly agree that team work is an effective way of organising people to get things done. I would continue to further illustrate my stand in this essay. TEAM = Together Everyone Achieves More. Page 1/6 2. 0 OWN EXPERIENCE As part of my Polytechnic final year project requirement, we were to do a project in a group of 3 members. Through our hard work and team work, we manage to do well for this project and were awarded to participate in the final year project exhibition. However, we only had 4 weeks to prepare fo r this and to make matter even worst, our final year examination was also during this period ! Not only must we attended our classes and revised for the examination; we must also prepared for the exhibition ! We had to write up a lengthy report, gave a presentation and to coordinate and ensured the smooth flow of our exhibition within such a tight schedule. My members and I decided to split the work according to our expertise and interest. For example, member A did well in the module of Entrepreneurship, thus was tasked to prepare the Business Plan. On the other hand, I was tasked to write up a product report as I had more knowledge on our prototype. We decided to meet twice a week to update on our work and to check on the group’s progress as a whole making sure our work was in sync. I had no reservations about the hard and long hours of work we put in during this difficult period. However, we stayed focused and committed and was able to use our interpersonal skills to mob ilize ourselves to be motivated and work as a team. Furthermore, due to our careful planning and diligence, our project was well structured and managed to show case in the exhibition on time. Not only that, we were also awarded bronze in the category of Outstanding Display. Without teamwork, all these could never be achieved unless, one was given lot of time and had a light schedule and quality to be compromised. All for one one for all. Page 2/6 3. 0 RECENT EXAMPLE OF TEAMWORK I would like to bring your attention to the recent Formula 1 night racing in Singapore. There were 15 members in a pit stop team and they could easily change the 4 tyres of the racing car within 6 seconds ! The driver had to position the car 6 to 12 inches from where the mechanics were waiting to pounce on the car. Three men stood at each of the 4 corners of the car while one operated the wheel gun, another taking off the wheel and the third replacing it. Also, one mechanic would stand at the front ope rating the front jack while another would be at the back operating the rear jack. The 15th members would then stand behind the driver’s head to steady the crash hoop while the car was on the jack. Obviously, every member’s role could easily affect the others; hence, without good teamwork and coordination, any split seconds delay could have an impact on the result of the race. 4. 0 EXAMPLE FROM A VIDEO CLIP While researching in the National Library, I came across a video (2) which showed how teamwork could do miracle. The Building Industry Association of San Diego County wanted to promote teamwork and new construction methods; hence, organized a competition to see if two teams could break the world record (4 hours 20 minutes) for building a house. It had three bed rooms, two bathroom, nine rooms and a garage. Each team consisted of builders, engineers, architects etc, who planned and practiced each aspect of the operation and brainstormed new techniques to built a house, which under normal circumstance; would take 90 days to complete. For example, the concrete was pre-heated so it could harden within an hour of pouring. Not to compromise to safety and quality, they had to follow the rigorous building and safety code requirements. Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships, by Michael Jordan. Page 3/6 The completed houses was inspected thoroughly and the winner only took 2 hours and 45 minutes to finish the construction; hence, a new world record was set ! Besides good planning, teamwork also played a major role as each party knew that their assignments would affect the next person’s ability to complete their tasks; so everyone worked as a well-coordinated team. 5. 0 JOURNALS By now, we would have known that teamwork can improve productivity and get things done. Besides that, it can also reduce injuries, cut cost, and improve on quality. I shall now use this journal, ‘The Journal for Quality Partic ipation’ (3) to illustrate on these. International Team Excellence Award allows participating teams to employ different variety of quality tools in the quest for process improvement. The Boeing Company was awarded gold in the year 2008. Their winning project centered on the Universal Splice Machine (USM), which is a mobile and automated system that uses electromagnets to clamp details as it drilled and set fasteners along one of the major splices in the tail section of Boeing’s C-17 aircraft. This USM project improved process efficiency and reduced repetitive motion injuries of the employees. The team members were selected based on several factors such as responsibility, expertise, process ownership, and planning ability. They were to attend regular meetings in person or via tele-conferencing to brainstorm and discussed on the status of actions and project needs. All of them were well prepared to work together and underwent trainings related to ‘Team Formation ’, Team Building’ and ‘Collaboration’. All these showed their determination to promote strong team membership for efficient team operation. Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much. Page 4/6 Their effort was paid off as the project achieved good results as man-load requirements were reduced from four to one mechanics, defects were reduced by 50 percents, hours worked were lowered from 311 to 97, and the overall time span went from six days to just two days. These benefits also translated to improve ergonomic, enhances mechanic efficiency and workmanship and reduced operation cost. Finally, I would like to recommend a model which could be used to improve on teamwork. The Reflective Teamwork Model was discussed in a journal (4) via a case study. It was a model whereby staffs working together discussed, developed and advanced ways in which they could work together as a team. The teacher and teacher assistant pair worked for at least one ses sion per week using this approach (table 1), with 15 minutes of structured planning time per session. They were given trainings to improve their team working skills, active listening, criticism and interrupting etc to enable them to use this model. This approach reflected the importance of team planning and staffs’ vital roles. After which, the writers collected feedbacks and data from teachers and teacher assistants after they used this model. The results showed an improvement in working practices during the intervention to the fact that the teacher and teacher assistants’ relationship had been strengthened. They felt that it was due to the Reflective Teamwork Model ‘forcing them’ (e. g. the assistant had to tell the teacher two things that did not go well and the teacher had to listen) to give each other quality listening time. They also felt that it enabled them to problem-solve more effectively. Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is pr ogress; working together is success. Table 1. The Reflective Teamwork Model 6. 0 CONCLUSION With the examples and journals provided herein, I would like to conclude by agreeing that team work is an effective way of organising people to get things done. It is through teamwork that quality, cost and systems improvements can be best achieved. . None of us is as smart as all of us. Words C ount: 1511 Page 6/6 REFERENCE LIST 1. Jacobs, J. , Heighway, R. Landsat - An Overview of the Landsat Satellites

Some of the most popular and valued remote sensing images of the Earth are obtained from the Landsat satellites which have been orbiting the Earth for over 40 years. Landsat is a joint venture between NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey that began in 1972 with the launch of Landsat 1. Previous Landsat Satellites Originally known as the  Earth Resources Technology Satellite 1,  Landsat 1 was launched in 1972 and deactivated in 1978. Landsat 1 data was used to identify a new island off the coast of Canada in 1976, which was subsequently named Landsat Island. Landsat 2 was launched in 1975 and deactivated in 1982. Landsat 3 was launched in 1987 and deactivated in 1983. Landsat 4 was launched in 1982 and stopped sending data in 1993.   Landsat 5 was launched in 1984 and holds the world record  for being the longest-serving Earth-observing satellite in operation, serving for more than 29 years, until 2013. Landsat 5 was utilized for longer than expected because Landsat 6 was unable to attain orbit following the launch in 1993. Landsat 6 was the only Landsat to fail before sending data to the Earth.   Current Landsats Landsat 7 remains in orbit after having been launched on  April 15, 1999.  Landsat 8, the newest Landsat, was launched on February 11, 2013.   Landsat Data Collection The Landsat satellites make loops around the Earth and are constantly collecting images of the surface through the use of a variety of sensing devices. Since the beginning of the Landsat program in 1972, the images and data have been available to all countries around the world. Landsat data is free and available to anyone on the planet. Images are used to measure rainforest loss, assist with mapping, determine urban growth, and measure population change. The different Landsats each have different remote-sensing equipment. Each sensing device records radiation from the surface of the Earth in different bands of the electromagnetic spectrum. Landsat 8 captures images of the Earth on several difference spectrums (visible, near-infrared, short wave infrared, and thermal-infrared spectrums). Landsat 8 captures about 400 images of the Earth each day, far more than the 250 a day of Landsat 7.   As it orbits the Earth in a north-south pattern, Landsat 8 collects images from a swath about 115 miles (185 km) across, using  a push broom sensor, which captures data from the entire swatch at the same time. This is different than the whiskbroom sensor of Landsat 7 and other previous Landsat satellites, which would move across the swath, more slowly capturing imagery.   The Landsats orbit the Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole on a continual basis. Landsat 8 captures imagery from approximately 438 miles (705 km)  above the surface of the Earth. Landsats complete a full orbit of the Earth in about 99 minutes, allowing the Landsats to achieve about 14 orbits per day. The satellites make a complete coverage of the Earth every 16 days.   About five passes cover the entire United States, from Maine and Florida to Hawaii and Alaska. Landsat 8 crosses the Equator every day at approximately 10 a.m. local time. Landsat 9   NASA and the USGS announced in early 2015 that Landsat 9 is being developed and scheduled for launch in 2023, ensuring that data will be collected and made freely available about the Earth for another half-century.   All Landsat data is available to the public free of charge and is in the public domain. Access Landsat imagery through NASAs  Landsat Image Gallery. The Landsat Look Viewer from the USGS is another archive of Landsat imagery.

Strategy Formulation Implementation and Control †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Strategy Formulation, Implementation and Control. Answer: 1.After putting into consideration the insinuations derived from the analysis of the external and internal environment, and the new objectives, a suitable generic strategy for sky TV in its efforts to regain its market share and sell augmentation is the differentiation strategy. It is suitable for the company because according to Ge Jackson (2014), the strategy will involve the development of unique products that will enhance the businesss competitive advantage. Also, the strategy emphasizes on the provision of a wide range of varieties through innovation. The expectations of Skynets shareholders are to regain its market share and augment its sales. The strategy will adequately address the above-mentioned expectations of the stakeholders (Luck Lancaster, 2013). Importantly the employees would not be concerned with outsourcing issues as the strategy requires their level of expertise. Owing to the resources at the disposal of the business, adopting the strategy is feasible in that it can be implemented successfully. The necessary inputs are available to generate the output and consumer demand that would ultimately cater for the incurred costs. In comparison with other strategies, attaining break even is much easier with the differentiation strategy. 2.So as to make the differentiation strategy action oriented, the company should follow programs or activities: one, unique Product development to set itself apart from its competitors. This will entail putting in place a development team that is highly skilled and emphasizes on creativity in product development (TregoeTobia, 1990). Two, ensure profitability of the current products by putting together a strong sales team that has demonstrated success in communicating the strengths of Sky TV in the markets. Three, increase the product variety so as to tap into different market segments. Four, constant product improvement to ensure the entity maintains a competitive advantage over its rivals. Five, developing a way to foresee shifts in customer tastes and preferences (Mascarenhas, 2011). 3.To maximize its sales and profitability, there are various ways through which Sky TV can pursue an intensive growth strategy. First, the business can focus on diversification where the entity will be entering a line of business that has striking similarities with the existing specialties of business. The main focus in this method is Sky Net's core competencies. The process might involve the product/ market introduction that is within the confines of the industry or, moving into an industry that bears the minimal relationship to the current industry (Kim, Lee Cho, 2016). Second Sky TV should look to penetrate the market more. Market penetration comes in handy in areas outside its headquarters where it comes into direct competition with its competitors. This method does not involve the introduction of new products but the use of already existing products to draw consumers away from competitors or convert consumers thereby increasing its market share (Gregory, 2017). 4.Diversification is one of the intensive growth strategies that will enable Sky TV capture a major market share. Through this strategy, the company will be taking a step away from its existing specialty and delving into a new value chain. Specifically, through related diversification- entering a line of business that has striking similarities with the existing specialties of business (Gregory, 2017)- the company will be able to exploit a central competency and facilitate its development in an attempt to enhance its capture of the Pacific region. Sky Net's core competencies include the range of products under its name that is difficult to imitate such as Game of Thrones, and the popularity of the show means it can be leveraged into different businesses thus contributing to the general enjoyment of the customers. The implementation will be carried out in the following steps: setting the objectives for diversification, revision of policies to ensure the objectives are met, resource all ocation to areas that are important strategically, changes in the organizational structure in line with the strategy, management of resistance that might accompany the change, and introduction of a reward system targeting the results in performances (Ramaswamy, PurkayasthaPetitt, 2017). 5.There are a couple of innovation types applicable to the differentiation strategy to offset Netflixs innovation strategy. Firstly, Sky Net could employ break through innovation. This should be a concept that is new and pits the business ahead of its competitors. Also, the innovation could be one that combines the functionality of other services offered by the competitors all under one platform (Nielson, 2013). Secondly, sustaining innovations could very well provide a platform upon which existing products are improved to a point where the product will be deemed to have reached its life cycle. Thirdly, new market innovations that will entail the application of existing Skynet products a new way to a different set of consumers (Nielson, 2013). Lastly, is the disruptive innovation. This will facilitate Skynets bid to regain its leadership position by disrupting Netflixs innovation strategy by enhancing the acceptance of its products through simplification of the user experience, keepi ng the products features such Age Ratings at a minimum to enable a relatively large group customers to adopt the product. This way Skynet will set themselves apart from the pack. The resources needed will include the following. To start with, the needed technical competencies in the execution of an innovation project are important. Second, information detailing the end users need and preferences is important to avoid instances of trial and error. Moreover, it is important to have personnel whose entire focus and duty are the perfections of the innovation (Nielson, 2013). 6.Evaluation and monitoring of the strategic plan are important in ensuring it yields the expected results. Control mechanisms are adopted for this purpose. For the case of sky net, strategic surveillance could be beneficial in the evaluation and monitoring. The process will involve the collection of information needed by the company, transformation in of information into a usable form, assessment, and distribution (Barnat, n.d). This form of evaluation and monitoring could suit Skynet in the following ways: data on consumers will be generated in relation to the solvency and evolution of their needs, the technological aspects of the market in relation to available, emerging or just unveiled technology and lastly, the monitoring of the external environment. This is important since laws and regulations, politics, sociology and economics affect the show business (Barnat, n.d). The other type of strategic control applicable to Skynet is implementation control. It involves identification of intermediate goals and milestones. These are then monitored and in an attempt to identify problems and shortfalls (Barnat, n.d). Also, this control method assesses whether the business is moving towards its goals- gaining a larger market share and increasing profitability. Further, this type of control will ascertain whether the resources committed to a project such as product development would benefit the business. If not, it is an indicator of whether corrective measures should be taken. References Barnat, R. (n.d).Strategic Management ::Strategic Surveillance. Strategic-control.24xls.com.
